Snapshots: A Peek Into Our Homeschool Week

When the Lord kept asking me to wrestle with the idea of homeschooling, I could not have imagined the lessons, the challenges, and the great joy that lay ahead. I know homeschool isn't for everyone, but I'm so thankful I trusted His call and am blessed to wear the shoe while it fits.

For anyone who's curious here's a peek into a few of educational pursuits last week.

Bible
Reviewing the first 30 events timeline of scripture (Veritas Press Genesis - Joshua)
Working on naming the event, scripture reference, and date from memory.

Reading
Luke is reading Fox in Sox to me, David, and Jonathan.

I like to keep a read aloud book going with Caleb that's above his reading level; it's our special time together. Sometimes he sits with me, and other times he colors or plays with legos. Right now we're selecting books from Lamplighter.net; fantastic books of timeless tales that build character through a Biblical theological framework. We're currently reading Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince.

I also try to keep a chapter book read aloud going with all the boys. Friday we finished Balto and the Great Race by Elizabeth Kimmel. They LOVED this book. We watched a documentary because they wanted to see the real Balto, and then we watched the animated film Balto. All were in favor that while the movie was really good, the book was better! As is often the case, the movie leaves out a ton and pads on the fiction.

Poetry
Here are the poems each boy is currently memorizing from Favorite Poems for Children.

Luke had a bike accident during a play break that left his nose all swollen. We were suppose to be coming in for math lessons, but I called an audible and turned on the tube while he iced. No one was opposed.

Math
Calendar, Estimating Pretzels, Multiplication Manipulatives, Counting, and Graphing

TypeKids.com

Shurley Grammar and A Beka Spelling

Writing
Copy Work - Catechism (Truth and Grace Memory Book)
Writing a friendly letter

Music
The boys are playing some game to sort their planes equally while listening to Say Hello to Classical Music. They've learned to recognize certain pieces as we've talked about the way music communicates images and ideas. Their favorites are William Tell Overture (aka Lone Ranger), Flight of the Bumblebee, and Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.

Anybody wondering what about little D-man? :-)
Coloring on the wall (yes, the wall)
Magnets on a cookie sheet
His current favorite past time...zooming cars and trucks all over everything.
