Scripture Cards for Lenten Lights (Printable)

Tonight we start one of our treasured traditions, Lenten Lights. 

I mentioned Lenten lights a couple of weeks ago when sharing how we use Lent Traditions and Resources in our home.  There are seven Lenten candles to be used throughout the Lent season marking each Sunday of Lent, or you can start the Saturday before Palm Sunday and watch the seven candles snuff out daily as Good Friday quickly approaches.

I created scripture cards to go alongside the devotional that we use by Noel Piper,  Lenten Lights: Eight Biblical Devotions to Prepare for Easter.

All the scriptures used were selected from the devotions and are presented in the same order. (Though I used the NIV translation.)

You will only find scripture on these cards, a companion resource to the full devotions that include Piper's insights and additional scripture readings for each candle. Print off  Lenten Lights: Eight Biblical Devotions to Prepare for Easter and each devotion can be read before gathering around the lights. 

To use these cards cut out the eight rectangles [matchbox style], fold along the middle dotted line, and glue the backs together if not laminating.  Hole punch, laminate, and string for an ornament that can be hung on, around, or near the Lenten lights.

Each card tells you how many candles are lit before the reading and when to blow the candle out.  Read the front of the card first; then read the additional scripture(s) on the back of the card. 

We close with a hymn because though the darkness seems to be growing through the snuffing of each candle, there is still light and hope in the promised Messiah. It is not until Good Friday, the darkest day in history, when Christ is crucified that all the lights are snuffed out and all hope seems to be gone.  

But Sunday is coming!
