Spicing Up A Routine Trip to the Zoo

We love being literally 10 minutes from one of the best zoos in the country. This past week for a "Fun Friday Field Trip," we headed to the zoo but with a couple of easy activities that would add some spice to a routine zoo visit.

Jonathan's author study this month has been Eric Carle, and Have You Seen My Cat? has been a favorite book for all my boys. We brought the book with us and pulled it out as we entered Cat Country at the zoo. We then tried to identify all the cats in the book.

#1 Have You Seen My Cat? by Eric Carle

"Have you seen my cat?"

"That is not my cat!"
It's a jaguar!

"Have you seen my cat?"

"That is not my cat!"
It's a panther!

And so forth... :-)

#2 Animal A-B-C Book
Caleb and Luke worked together to start an Animal A-B-C Book. Caleb labeled 26 pages A-Z, and he and Luke alphabetically categorized the different animals we saw. I took pictures, and the plan is to print off the photos of the animals, glue them in abc sequence, and laminate the book. We didn't make it all the way through the alphabet this trip, so the boys are coming up with a list of animals we need to see on our next visit to cover the entire alphabet and complete the book.

We like to make one keeper chat, feeding, show, etc, and today all three big boys got to feed the giraffes. Look at that tongue!

#3 Letter of the Week Animal
Our letter of the week was "E," so our highlighted animal of the week was the elephant. We discussed what we already knew about elephants, what we wanted to learn about elephants, and what we found out from our reading and zoo trip.

All four boys checking out the elephants.

#4 Journaling
