Inside our Advent box

Always exciting when we pull the Advent box out of the closet! It's like a big present as they're all trying to rip the tape off and start pulling things out while hollering at each other about what they're finding inside!

Inside we have Christmas books, the boys' play nativity, cooking paraphernalia, coloring and activity books, crafts, a nativity puzzle, music, birthday party items for Jesus, etc. After Christmas sales are a great time to stock our box for the next year!

Each night of Advent we light the candle(s) for the week, sing our carols the boys are learning that week, pray for "Christmas card families", and open the daily door in The Advent Book which has our reading for the night. You reread each previously opened door, and by Christmas day, our little guys can pretty well recite the unwatered down scriptural account of Christ's birth.
During this season of little years, we want our devo times to be short and sweet and meaningful and memorable!

I've used this book for several years now and consider it a valuable gift for moms fighting to keep Christ the focus of Christmas in the midst of a very commercialized season. Instead of abandoning many Christmas traditions Lisa Whelchel "rediscovered their original meanings which were meant to remind people of God's unfathomable gift." She helps families see how Christ really is to be found in the most common cultural traditions such as wrapping gifts, lights, treats, Christmas trees, and yes even Santa Clause. Every where you look there is an opportunity to talk about Christ and keep Him the focus and theme of the season! The book has 25 Advent activities, and you can check it out here.
