Kicking off "P" week with some yummy pancakes.
We added blueberries to our pancakes just like Curious George, and we talked about how glad we were that we didn't have to go milk a cow, grind wheat into flour, etc like Jack did just to get his pancakes in Eric Carle's Pancakes, Pancakes!
Freezing rain outside but that didn't stop the boys from enjoying their P...P...P... Popsicles!
We came home with 38 library books last week! Here were a few of our favorites:
Perfect Soup is a great story about giving without expecting anything in return.
The Three Snow Bears is a spin off Goldilocks and The Three Bears which we read just last month during our Fairy Tales unit. This was a good opportunity to talk about how the two stories were similar and how they were different.
Audrey Wood writes delightful books for toddlers and preschoolers. Browsing her section at the library does not disappoint! Two of her books were perfect for "P" week.
A few of Caleb's books to read to his brothers this week as they learned P's sound and their beginning unit on Things That Go!
Things That Go!
Since two of our letter "P" books were about penguins we did a couple of fun science experiments to learn more about God's design for this cool animal. The experiment ideas came from TeachersPayTeachers. I use this web site all the time for ideas and printables!
First we put petroleum jelly on the outside of one hand, and then placed both hands in the water. Then we observed what happened when both hands were removed and how the water responded. This experiment shows how the oil on a penguin's stiff outer feathers acts as a barrier, protecting the soft feathers and keeping them dry.
Then second experiment helped us understand how the penguin's blubber layer keeps him warm. We made a "blubber glove" by placing one ziplock bag inside another and filling the outer bag with vegetable shortening. The boys put one hand in ice water without the glove and then put their other hand in the water with the glove on to see which hand felt warmer.
After learning all about bones and our skeleton system last month, Caleb started a new unit study on the circulatory system.
This book has been a perfect tool for helping me introduce the boys to a variety of art.
Abstract drawings!
