100 Days of Home School!

We celebrated our 100th Day of Home School last week!

Caleb helping Luke with his letter "O" activities

Luke practicing his "O"s in his  Handwriting Without Tears My First School Book for PreK

Reviewing our Big Picture Bible TimeLine of the Old Testament Part 1 by sorting them into the correct order and then telling the stories.

We wrapped up or Fairy Tales unit with The Three Little Pigs

Luke's sorted and graphed M&Ms, goldfish, and now bottle caps!

Caleb finished his science unit on bones. He colored his own skeleton book to match the laminated cards I had made of the major bones he has been learning about.

The Five In a Row (FIAR) literature curriculum has brought much delightful learning for not only the boys but myself as well this year. We have fallen in love with new stories and characters from an excellent selection of literature. Through these picture books doors are opened to art, history, vocabulary, geography, science, human relationship, math, and writing. The books chosen showcase "close family relationships, personal triumphs, and persevering in times of trial" and also include a wide range of artistic expression and beautiful art.

This past week our FIAR book was My Very First Last Time by Jan Andrews

A few of our topics of discussion included:
  • Geography - setting Ungava Bay, Northern Canada, which empties into the northern Atlantic Ocean, not far from the Arctic Ocean
  • Inuit Culture
  • Story Writing - Good Titles
  • Vocabulary and Drama - we acted out words such as dragging, heaving, peering, prying, scrambling
  • Art - Shadow detail in Ian Wallace's paintings
  • Math - Ordinal Numbers
  • Safety and Crisis Thinking
  • Science  - Tides
We also watched this video of the Inuits of Canada walking on the sea bed gathering mussels. It shows in real life what the character Eva in My Very First Last Time does.
