Morning Bible:
Advent Tree and Reading with The Jesus Storybook Bible
I wanted to make some type of Jesse tree or Advent tree this year. After browsing through the bookstore, library, etsy, and numerous websites all full of beautiful and meaningful traditions and resources, I decided this year we would use the free Family Advent Art and Reading Guide from StoryWarren.com, a website that exists to help us stir a holy imagination in our children. A few reasons I chose this guide... First, gorgeous free watercolor ornament printables that were exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something lovely that neither I nor the kids had to color. I was looking for easy yet beautiful ornaments to stir their imagination. Just print and hang; I added a background and laminated as well.
Secondly, this reading guide is so simple. Read from the Bible and let scripture do its work. There is one overarching takeaway sentence.
I’m a huge fan of Sally Lloyd-Jones’ The Jesus Storybook Bible, which both tells the grand story, and explains how each chapter fits within God’s larger plan. With just a little nudge, the Storybook Bible makes the best Advent reader ever!

Lunch Time:
Character Trait ~ Faith
Every one to two weeks we talk about a different character trait and usually it's simply through stories at lunch using A Child's Book of Character Building. Keeping in line with this week's Advent theme of faith, we talked about what it meant for the prophets to have faith and read other stories about faith in the Bible and faith at home.
Afternoon Advent Read Aloud:
Our first read aloud book is The Twenty-four Days Before Christmas by Madeleine L'Engle. A delightful story about the anticipation and the daily Advent traditions of the Austin family.
Advent Picture Books: Tradition of the Christmas Tree
We are getting our Christmas tree this Friday for family night, so all week we're reading special books about the tradition of the Christmas tree. The two we read today...
Why Christmas Trees Aren't Perfect by Richard H. Schneider
"And some, like the wise Queen, saw the love of Christ expressed on earth."
"For, as have many of us, the trees have learned that living for the sake of others makes us most beautiful in the eyes of God."
Glowing illustrations beautifully capture this charming poem.
